Crosby Traveling Block Training

Crosby Traveling Block Training

On September 10th Howard Supply Company had the privilege of hosting a 70 and 80 Series Traveling Block training session conducted by The Crosby Group. The morning session was conducted by Guy Coonts, Manager-Sustaining Engineering. Training consisted of discussions regarding API Recommended Practice 8B where it applies to their product. Also presented were numerous slides, pictures, and charts defining critical wear areas, dimensional data, wear tolerances, and remove from service criteria. Discussions were also held on sheave wear, and tolerances in the upper block. This seems to be a major area of concern for HSC customers, and we were given a lot of information and formulas to calculate when a sheave should be considered worn out and removed from service.
The afternoon session was led by Mack Taylor, Manufacturing Engineering Manager for the McKissick Products Division of Crosby. Mack disassembled a 73 Series lower block with assistance from many in our group. He brought along some “custom” tools to aid in making the job easier, and safer. The spring loaded 70 Series blocks are potentially very dangerous if each step is not followed meticulously during disassembly. Mack pointed out features of the block, and discussed changes that have been made through the years. After reassembly of the 70 Series Block, we moved to the non-spring loaded 80 Series block. We were all very interested to see the unique split retainer ring currently used to attach and hold the hook assembly to the block body. Disassembly and re-assembly is so much easier with this feature. There were quite a few pointers we were given to ensure proper re-assembly, both for fit and operational reasons.
HSC thanks The Crosby Group, and especially Guy and Mack for their involvement with our people! It was a pleasure working with them, and I know we will be a better partner for Crosby because of this exclusive training.
